The key to happiness – shopping in Cologne

I was just lying on the balcony sunbathing when the sudden rain suddenly heralded the arrival of fall. At this time of year, I always feel like wearing a turtleneck sweater and chunky boots. But as I rummaged through my closet, I was faced with a familiar problem… I have nothing to wear because of all the clothes. Fortunately, I was able to resist the urge to store and would like to recommend the best places to store in Cologne instead. I mean… Have you really been on vacation if your suitcase isn’t at least two kilos overweight?

Schildergasse and Hohe Strasse – The shopping mecca

If you’re shopping in Cologne, you can’t avoid Schildergasse and Hohe Strasse. They form Cologne’s largest and most popular shopping mile. On the way from Cologne Cathedral to Neumarkt, you will find everything your heart desires. Above all, of course, the big chain stores such as Zara, H&M and Douglas.

The Peek & Cloppenburg building should particularly catch your eye. The company calls it the Weltstadthaus and consists of a huge glass dome that resembles the hull of a ship. Or not? The people of Cologne seem to have other associations and affectionately call it the whale.

My favorite place to go is TK Maxx. Sure, there’s always a lot going on and the sorting is a bit confusing. But if there’s one store where I always find special things that not everyone has, it’s this one. And this has been the case for years. The perfect place to go if you can’t find what you’re looking for in the usual stores. The company’s philosophy is to offer you high-quality and exciting brands at up to 60% less. No wonder that my finds have included one or two designer bargains. What more could you want?

Street of Honor – Away from the hustle and bustle

Not in the mood for the hustle and bustle of Schildergasse? If you leave TK Maxx to the right, the streets become small alleys and large stores become small boutiques. Then you know that you are heading towards Ehrenstraße. But you won’t only find expensive boutiques on and around them… this is a prejudice that a surprising number of people believe without ever having been there. Especially if you prefer shopping in small, varied stores or vintage and second-hand stores, Ehrenstraße is your key to paradise.

Must-see: PICKNWEIGHT is definitely a highlight. The range covers every taste from simple basics to extremely unusual. The special feature: You don’t pay per item, but per kilo of clothes. The Dr. Martens store is also worth a visit, because the shoes are really worth the money and, with the right care, will last for decades.

But Ehrenstraße also has something in store for those who don’t like shopping. Small restaurants and snack bars open here regularly and quickly become the hottest tip in town. Just the other day, my sister dragged me to a store that sells lavishly decorated cinnamon rolls in every flavor. The latest craze, as she promised me several times. Accordingly, there was a lot going on.

Whatever you choose, the greatest shopping experiences are right on the doorstep of our hotels. The best way to avoid having to travel several stops by train with a handful of bags, so if you’re thinking: “Shoot, I need something for fall, too.” Then a short trip to Cologne is just the thing and you should click on “Find out more” to start planning. Our team will also be happy to answer your questions by phone or e-mail.
